Spring Lawn Care Tips for Central Ohio Homeowners

Get your lawn ready for the growing season with these expert spring lawn care tips tailored for Central Ohio's unique climate and soil conditions.

Spring Lawn Care Tips for Central Ohio Homeowners

Spring is right around the corner in Central Ohio, and that means it’s time to start thinking about your lawn. After months of cold weather, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles, your yard needs some attention to bounce back strong. Here are the steps our team at Stiltner Landscapes recommends to get your property looking its best this season.

1. Start with a Thorough Cleanup

Before you do anything else, clear out the debris that accumulated over winter. Fallen branches, matted leaves, and leftover holiday decor can all smother your grass and invite disease.

  • Rake gently to remove matted leaves and thatch buildup
  • Pick up sticks and debris from winter storms
  • Clear garden beds of dead annuals and winter mulch

A clean slate lets sunlight and air reach the soil, which is critical for early-season growth.

2. Test Your Soil

Central Ohio soils tend to be heavy clay with a slightly alkaline pH. Before you start throwing down fertilizer, get a soil test. The Ohio State University Extension offers affordable testing, and the results will tell you exactly what your lawn needs.

Key things to look for:

  • pH level — Most grasses prefer 6.0 to 7.0
  • Nutrient levels — Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium
  • Organic matter content — Aim for 3-5%

3. Aerate Compacted Areas

If your lawn sees heavy foot traffic or sits on clay soil (common in Dublin, Powell, and Westerville), core aeration is one of the best things you can do. Aeration pulls small plugs of soil out, allowing water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach the root zone.

The best time to aerate cool-season grasses in Central Ohio is early spring or early fall.

4. Overseed Bare Spots

Winter can leave bare patches, especially in high-traffic areas or spots where snow was piled up. Overseeding fills in those gaps and thickens your overall turf.

For Central Ohio, we recommend tall fescue blends or Kentucky bluegrass depending on your sun exposure. Seed-to-soil contact is essential, so rake the seed into the soil lightly and keep it moist for the first two to three weeks.

5. Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicide at the Right Time

Timing is everything with pre-emergent. Apply too early and it breaks down before crabgrass germinates. Too late and you’ve missed the window entirely.

In Central Ohio, the general rule is to apply pre-emergent when soil temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit for three to five consecutive days. This typically happens in mid-March to early April, but it varies year to year. A soil thermometer is a worthwhile investment.

Pro Tip: If you’ve overseeded, skip the pre-emergent in those areas. It will prevent your new grass seed from germinating too.

6. Set Your Mowing Height Correctly

Many homeowners cut their grass too short, which stresses the turf and encourages weed growth. For cool-season grasses in our area:

  • First mow of spring: Set your mower to about 2.5 inches
  • Regular season height: 3 to 3.5 inches
  • Never remove more than one-third of the blade length at a time

Sharp mower blades make clean cuts that heal faster and reduce disease risk.

7. Plan Your Fertilization Schedule

Spring fertilization gives your lawn the nutrients it needs to green up and grow strong. But more isn’t better — over-fertilizing can burn your grass and create thatch problems.

A balanced approach for Central Ohio lawns:

  1. Early spring (March-April): Light application of slow-release nitrogen
  2. Late spring (May): Second application if soil test indicates need
  3. Avoid heavy nitrogen in summer heat — save the heavier feeding for fall

8. Address Drainage Issues Early

Spring rains can reveal drainage problems you didn’t notice during drier months. Standing water, soggy spots, and erosion channels all need attention before they damage your lawn and landscape.

Common solutions include:

  • French drains for persistent wet areas
  • Grading adjustments to direct water away from structures
  • Rain gardens that turn problem areas into beautiful features
